Finding the right mathematical method

Start by identifying whether the problem asks for a value, a relationship between quantities, a geometric measurement, or a statistical summary. A percentage change is different from a percentage of a number; a mean is different from a median; area and volume use different units. The method you choose determines what the result means.

Enter signs, parentheses, units, and data consistently. For geometry, match the diagram's measurements to the labels. For statistics, check the sample and distribution assumptions. Review the worked example to see how inputs connect to the formula before applying it to your own numbers.
