How it works

A useful distinction

Equal increases affect area differently

Increasing a circle’s radius by 10% increases circumference by 10% but area by 21%. Compare the original and scaled radius to see why a slightly wider circle can need noticeably more covering material.

Distinguishing radius, diameter, and circumference

The radius runs from the center to the circle, while the diameter spans the circle through its center. Circumference measures the boundary and area measures the enclosed region. Mixing those quantities can produce a plausible-looking number with the wrong meaning. Keep length units consistent and remember that area uses squared units rather than the original length unit.

Circle dimensions: formula and assumptions

Diameter = 2r; circumference = 2πr; area = πr².

All linear outputs use the input length unit; area uses its square.

Common questions

How do radius and diameter differ?

The diameter is twice the radius. A radius runs from the center to the edge; a diameter crosses the circle through its center.

Why does the area use square units?

Area measures two-dimensional coverage. If radius is measured in centimeters, πr² is measured in square centimeters.
