Matching geometry formulas to shapes

Start with the shape and the quantities already known. A right triangle has an additional angle constraint that a general triangle does not. Circle measurements distinguish radius from diameter, and solid shapes distinguish surface area from volume. Selecting the correct geometric case is part of solving the problem.

Use compatible length units and match perpendicular heights to their bases. The resulting area uses squared units and volume uses cubic units. For irregular objects, a combination of simpler shapes may fit better than a single idealized formula.

Three sides

  • Side a
  • Side b
  • Side c

s = (a+b+c)/2; area = √[s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)].
