Grades, finals & GPA
- Required future GPA
- Target not attainable
- Highest possible cumulative GPA
- 3.47
- Total graded credits
- 90
About this result
The required future GPA exceeds the selected maximum. Try more future credits or a lower target.
Scenarios are alternatives for the same future credits, not consecutive semesters. Only graded credits count; repeated courses and exclusions follow your institution’s policy.
Detailed breakdown
| Scenario | Future GPA | Projected cumulative GPA | Target reached |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steady | 3 | 3.13 | No |
| Improved | 3.5 | 3.3 | No |
| Stretch | 4 | 3.47 | No |
How it works
Perfect future grades approach the ceiling
If your existing GPA is below the scale maximum, adding perfect grades can approach that maximum but cannot reach it exactly with finite additional credits in this model. A rounded display at the ceiling can conceal a lower unrounded result.
GPA goal calculator: plan the GPA you need
Choose Target GPA planner to enter your current cumulative GPA, completed graded credits, target GPA, future graded credits, and maximum grade points. The required future GPA is the credit-weighted average you need across those upcoming credits. A target above the selected scale is rejected, and a required average above its maximum is flagged as unattainable.
With a 3.2 GPA over 60 completed credits, reaching a 3.5 cumulative GPA after 30 more credits requires a 4.1 future GPA. On a 4.0 scale, the highest possible cumulative result is 3.47, so this credit plan cannot reach the target. Keeping the same current record and target but completing 60 future credits would require a 3.8 average.
Compare future GPA scenarios
Each scenario row represents a separate possible average over the same future credits. For a 3.2 GPA over 60 completed credits and 30 future credits, future averages of 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 produce cumulative GPAs of 3.13, 3.30, and 3.47. The table shows whether each scenario reaches the target using unrounded values.
If you are planning several semesters, total their graded credits and use their credit-weighted average in a scenario, or enter planned courses by semester in Courses & semester GPA. Exclude pass/fail work where your institution excludes it, and check rules for repeated courses, transfers, and rounding.
Target GPA planner: formula and assumptions
Required future GPA = [target × (completed + future credits) − current × completed credits] / future credits.
Compare the required GPA with your institution’s maximum. Each scenario combines your existing quality points with future GPA × future credits. Future credits must be positive, and all GPAs must use the same scale.

Example result
Required future GPA: Target not attainable
Highest possible cumulative GPA: 3.47
Total graded credits: 90
- The required future GPA exceeds the selected maximum. Try more future credits or a lower target.
- Scenarios are alternatives for the same future credits, not consecutive semesters. Only graded credits count; repeated courses and exclusions follow your institution’s policy.

Common questions
What if the required future GPA exceeds my school's maximum?
The target is unattainable under the entered credit plan and scale. Changing future credits or the target changes the scenario.
