How it works
Extra credits increase a grade’s influence
On the same grade-point scale, improving a four-credit course by one point adds twice the quality points of improving a two-credit course by one point. Compare course-level scenarios before assuming every grade change affects cumulative GPA equally.
Calculate semester and cumulative GPA with credit hours
Use Courses & semester GPA to enter each course, semester, grade, and credit hours. Choose letter grades, grade points, or percentages, and check the editable scale against your institution’s rules. Previous cumulative GPA and previous graded credits combine your existing record with the new courses. Do not also enter those previous courses in the course rows.
Each course contributes grade points × credits. An A worth 4 points in a 3-credit course and a B worth 3 points in a 4-credit course produce 24 quality points over 7 credits: a semester GPA of 3.43. The results table groups courses by semester, and the cumulative result weights all included courses by credits.
Courses & semester GPA: formula and assumptions
Cumulative GPA = total quality points / total graded credits.
Each included course contributes grade points × credits. Semester GPAs are weighted by credits, then combined with your previous record. Scales are examples, not a universal institution policy.
Course GPA: formula and assumptions
GPA = Σ(grade points×credits)/Σcredits.
Enter numeric grade points using your institution's scale. Letter-grade conversions and honors weighting vary by school.

Common questions
Why is cumulative GPA weighted by credits?
A course or semester with more graded credits contributes more quality points. Averaging GPA figures without their credit weights can give the wrong result.
