How it works
Separate enrollment cost from later years
If annual college costs keep rising, multiplying the first enrollment-year cost by four understates a four-year total. Test education inflation separately from investment returns; increasing both does not automatically leave the savings target unchanged.
Matching college savings with expected costs
College planning combines a current cost estimate, time until enrollment, cost growth, and savings contributions. Review how much of the projected expense is funded rather than looking only at the account balance. A change in the inflation assumption affects the target, while the investment return affects savings growth. The taxable-savings mode includes only its stated tax treatment, not every education-account rule.
College savings plan: formula and assumptions
Inflate each study year's cost, then solve a monthly contribution to reach the total at enrollment.
This conservative model funds all nominal study costs at enrollment and assumes no investment growth during the study years.

Using the College savings plan example:
- Annual cost today ($)
- 30000
- Annual education-cost increase (%)
- 4
- Years until enrollment
- 10
- Years of study
- 4
- Current education savings ($)
- 10000
- Annual effective return (%)

Inflate each study year's cost, then solve a monthly contribution to reach the total at enrollment.

Common questions
Does the model assume savings keep growing during college?
No. It aims to hold all modeled nominal study costs at enrollment and assumes no investment gains during the study years.
How does the taxable-savings mode apply tax?
It taxes positive accumulated interest at each saving year-end. Monthly contributions are not interest, and the model does not establish 529 or other account tax eligibility.
How do I model partial funding?
Enter the share of projected costs to fund from these savings. Scholarships, grants and financial-aid awards are not selected automatically.
