Grades, finals & GPA
- Required final score
- Target not attainable
- Highest possible overall grade
- 89.5%
About this result
The target requires more than 100% on the remaining assessment. Lower the target or check whether extra credit is available.
How it works
A small target change can matter
When the final is worth 20% of the course, raising your overall target by one percentage point raises the required exam score by five points. Compare nearby targets to see how exam weight amplifies the remaining task.
Final exam grade calculator: what score do you need?
Choose Required final score and enter your current grade before the final, your target overall grade, and the final exam weight. Required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − exam weight / 100)) / (exam weight / 100). Your current grade must exclude the final; do not use a grade that already counts an ungraded final as zero.
For example, an 85% current grade, an 88% target, and a final worth 30% require 95% on the exam. A result above 100% is flagged as unattainable without extra credit. A negative result means the target is already secured even with a zero on the final under these weights. Displayed values are rounded to two decimal places; use your course’s rounding and completion rules.
Required final score: formula and assumptions
Required final = [target−current×(1−final weight)]/final weight.
A required score above 100% means the target cannot be reached without extra credit under these assumptions.
Required final score with letter inputs: formula and assumptions
Required score = [target − current × (1 − remaining share)] / remaining share.
The mathematical result can exceed 100 or be negative. Letter inputs use the editable representative-score map.
Worked example
Using the Required final score example:
- Current grade (%)
- 85
- Target overall grade (%)
- 90
- Final assessment weight (%)
- 30
Required final = [target−current×(1−final weight)]/final weight.
Example result
Required final score: Target not attainable
Highest possible overall grade: 89.5%
- The target requires more than 100% on the remaining assessment. Lower the target or check whether extra credit is available.

Common questions
What does a required final score above 100% mean?
The target cannot be reached under the entered assumptions without extra credit or another change permitted by the course rules.
What current grade should I enter for the final exam calculation?
Enter your average on the work that makes up the non-final portion of the course. It must exclude the final exam. If your gradebook already counts the final as a zero, recalculate the current average before using it.
