How it works
A deduction and credit reduce different amounts
Within an unchanged assumed 22% marginal bracket, a 1,000 deduction saves about 220 before other interactions. A fully usable 1,000 credit reduces tax by 1,000. Enter each in its own field rather than treating them interchangeably.
Selecting the correct US tax worksheet
Start with the tax year and the specific income, deduction, or credit question you need to model. The calculator contains separate supported branches, so a result from one worksheet should not be assumed to represent an entire return. Review eligibility and limitation notes beside the selected mode. Changing the website language or currency does not convert these US federal rules into another country's tax system.
2026 federal wage estimate: formula and assumptions
Apply progressive 2026 federal brackets to taxable ordinary income after the chosen deduction. Calculate employee payroll taxes separately.
This wage-only estimate is not a complete tax return or W-4 withholding engine. State/local tax is an explicit amount you supply.
2025/2026 ordinary-income worksheet: formula and assumptions
Taxable income = max(0, ordinary income − adjustments − deduction); apply year-specific brackets.
Basic standard deductions reflect the amended 2025 and published 2026 amounts. Age/blindness, dependent status, itemization limits and special deductions require verified input. This is a bounded US federal scenario; it does not produce a completed tax return.
2026 base self-employment tax: formula and assumptions
Net earnings = 92.35% × profit; base SE tax = 12.4% subject to remaining Social Security wage base + 2.9% Medicare.
Regular nonfarm method and nonnegative combined profit. Earnings below $400 receive no base SE tax in this branch. Additional Medicare is separate. This is a bounded US federal scenario; it does not produce a completed tax return.
Additional Medicare coordination: formula and assumptions
Additional Medicare tax = 0.9% of eligible wages/SE earnings above the filing-status threshold, coordinated once.
Enter net SE earnings after the Schedule SE adjustment. The final liability threshold can differ from the employer withholding trigger. This is a bounded US federal scenario; it does not produce a completed tax return.
2026 qualified dividends & gains: formula and assumptions
Stack qualified gains above ordinary taxable income through the 0%, 15% and 20% bands.
This is the simple preferential-rate branch, excluding special-rate gains, loss netting and other worksheet exceptions. Ordinary taxable income is supplied after deductions. This is a bounded US federal scenario; it does not produce a completed tax return.
Net investment income tax: formula and assumptions
NIIT = 3.8% × min(eligible investment income, MAGI above the status threshold).
Income classification, material participation and allocable expenses must be established separately. Wages are not automatically investment income. This is a bounded US federal scenario; it does not produce a completed tax return.
2026 dependent-credit basic branch: formula and assumptions
Preliminary credit = $2,200 per qualified child + $500 per eligible other dependent − phaseout.
Basic ACTC uses the eligible remaining credit, $1,700 per-child cap and 15% of earnings above $2,500. This mode excludes three-child, Puerto Rico and other special Schedule 8812 branches. This is a bounded US federal scenario; it does not produce a completed tax return.
2026 basic additional child tax credit: formula and assumptions
Basic ACTC = min(eligible remaining child credit, $1,700 × children, 15% × max(0, earned income − $2,500)).
Enter a separately determined preliminary credit and applicable tax limit. Other-dependent credit is not refundable; this excludes the special Schedule 8812 branches. This is a bounded US federal scenario; it does not produce a completed tax return.
2026 AMT from computed ordinary AMTI: formula and assumptions
Additional AMT = max(0, tentative minimum tax after exemption − adjusted regular tax).
Uses the 2026 50% exemption phaseout and 26%/28% brackets. This mode excludes preferential gains, AMT foreign credits and MFS special AMTI adjustments; those need the full Form 6251. This is a bounded US federal scenario; it does not produce a completed tax return.
2025 / 2026 federal income and additional taxes: formula and assumptions
Return tax = income tax after credits + regular SE tax + Additional Medicare + NIIT + other verified taxes.
A planning estimate for the selected 2025 or 2026 tax year combining supported federal income, deductions and credits. QBI uses a verified deduction or one-business worksheet. EITC uses a verified credit or a continuous estimate. The additional child-credit calculation includes the three-or-more-child payroll alternative. AMT, special-return amounts and eligibility require the stated verified inputs. State/local calculations use separate entered assumptions.
2025 / 2026 standard deduction eligibility branches: formula and assumptions
Dependent basic deduction = min(status basic amount, max($1,350, earned income + $450)); add eligible age/blind amounts.
Eligibility is supplied. Verify the age-65 test for the selected tax year, along with blindness, dependency and special filing conditions. Select the applicable tax year. Dollar ceilings and tax bands use that year’s versioned parameters; 2025 does not include the 2026 nonitemizer charitable deduction, charitable floor, overall itemized reduction or active-business QBI minimum.
2025 / 2026 enhanced senior deduction: formula and assumptions
Per eligible senior: max(0, $6,000 − 6% × MAGI above the applicable threshold).
Married taxpayers must file jointly. Valid identification and age eligibility must be established. This deduction does not reduce AGI or provisional income for Social Security taxation. Select the applicable tax year. Dollar ceilings and tax bands use that year’s versioned parameters; 2025 does not include the 2026 nonitemizer charitable deduction, charitable floor, overall itemized reduction or active-business QBI minimum.
2025 / 2026 common itemized deductions: formula and assumptions
Apply selected-year medical, SALT and charitable limits. The 0.5%-of-AGI cash-charity floor and Section 68 reduction begin in 2026.
Common current-year cash donations up to 60% of AGI, with no other donation classes or carryovers. Other itemized amounts are supplied after their own eligibility limits. Select the applicable tax year. Dollar ceilings and tax bands use that year’s versioned parameters; 2025 does not include the 2026 nonitemizer charitable deduction, charitable floor, overall itemized reduction or active-business QBI minimum.
2025 / 2026 dependent-care credit amount: formula and assumptions
Eligible expense base × selected-year rate: 2025 uses a 35% to 20% schedule; 2026 begins at 50% with the two-stage phaseout.
Work, dependent, provider and expense eligibility must be verified. This is a nonrefundable credit; the standalone amount is not automatically usable in full. Excludes special MFS, deemed-earnings and prior-year expense rules. Select the applicable tax year. Dollar ceilings and tax bands use that year’s versioned parameters; 2025 does not include the 2026 nonitemizer charitable deduction, charitable floor, overall itemized reduction or active-business QBI minimum.
2025 / 2026 qualified tip deduction: formula and assumptions
Deduction = max(0, min($25,000, eligible tips) − $100 per completed $1,000 of MAGI above threshold).
Enter qualified voluntary cash or card tips after confirming the selected year’s occupation, reporting and identification rules. MFS is ineligible. Each business has its own net-income ceiling. Mandatory service charges do not qualify, and the deduction does not remove tips from wage or payroll-tax income.
2025 / 2026 qualified overtime deduction: formula and assumptions
Apply the $12,500 individual or $25,000 joint cap, then subtract $100 per completed $1,000 above the applicable MAGI threshold.
Enter only the FLSA-required premium above regular pay. Total pay for overtime hours, contractual bonuses and state-only premiums are not automatically eligible. For exactly 1.5× qualified overtime, the premium is one third of that total pay. MFS is ineligible. Select the applicable tax year. Dollar ceilings and tax bands use that year’s versioned parameters; 2025 does not include the 2026 nonitemizer charitable deduction, charitable floor, overall itemized reduction or active-business QBI minimum.
2025 / 2026 qualified personal vehicle interest: formula and assumptions
Cap eligible interest across all loans at $10,000, then subtract $200 per $1,000 or fraction above the MAGI threshold.
Verify a qualifying post-2024 first-lien purchase loan for a new personal-use vehicle with US final assembly and qualifying weight/use. Exclude interest deducted elsewhere. Refinances have qualified-debt limits. MFS uses the nonjoint threshold; vehicle and loan eligibility must be established separately. Select the applicable tax year. Dollar ceilings and tax bands use that year’s versioned parameters; 2025 does not include the 2026 nonitemizer charitable deduction, charitable floor, overall itemized reduction or active-business QBI minimum.
2025 / 2026 education credits by student: formula and assumptions
AOTC: 100% of first $2,000 plus 25% of next $2,000 per eligible student; LLC: 20% of up to $10,000 per return; then phaseouts and tax/refund limits.
Supports distinct AOTC and LLC students with one shared LLC expense cap. Confirm student, institution, reporting and identification requirements for the selected year. Refundability uses the claimant’s age and support facts. MFS is ineligible; no identifiers are collected.
2025 / 2026 student-loan interest deduction: formula and assumptions
Up to $2,500 per return, with joint MAGI phaseout $170,000–$200,000 for 2025 or $175,000–$205,000 for 2026; other eligible filers use $85,000–$100,000.
Verify a legally obligated qualified education loan and actual paid interest, excluding related-party/employer-plan loans and duplicate benefits. MFS and claimable dependents are ineligible. MAGI is measured before this deduction with the required addbacks. Select the applicable tax year. Dollar ceilings and tax bands use that year’s versioned parameters; 2025 does not include the 2026 nonitemizer charitable deduction, charitable floor, overall itemized reduction or active-business QBI minimum.
2025 / 2026 traditional IRA deduction ceiling: formula and assumptions
Deduction = min(contribution, compensation and shared annual capacity, income-dependent deduction ceiling).
The income phaseout reduces a ceiling rather than prorating your actual contribution. Compute spouses separately with verified compensation allocation. IRA and Social Security interactions may require the coordinated IRS worksheet. This does not calculate excess-contribution penalties. Select the applicable tax year. Dollar ceilings and tax bands use that year’s versioned parameters; 2025 does not include the 2026 nonitemizer charitable deduction, charitable floor, overall itemized reduction or active-business QBI minimum.
2025 / 2026 single-business QBI deduction: formula and assumptions
Apply the selected-year SSTB fraction, phased wage/property limit and taxable-income limit. The verified active-business minimum applies only in 2026.
One verified business. QBI excludes employee wages, nonbusiness interest, capital gains and deductible business tips, and is already reduced for allocable owner-level deductions. The 2026 $400 minimum requires at least $1,000 of active qualified QBI. Excludes multi-business loss allocation, aggregation, REIT/PTP and cooperative rules. Select the applicable tax year. Dollar ceilings and tax bands use that year’s versioned parameters; 2025 does not include the 2026 nonitemizer charitable deduction, charitable floor, overall itemized reduction or active-business QBI minimum.
2025 / 2026 QBI and overall itemized limitation: formula and assumptions
For 2026, calculate QBI before the Section 68 overall itemized reduction, then calculate that reduction using QBI. For 2025, no Section 68 overall reduction applies.
Uses a separately verified otherwise-allowed itemized amount and one qualified business. All deduction eligibility, individual itemized ceilings and qualified-business inputs must already be established. The QBI and itemized limitation are applied in statutory order. Select the applicable tax year. Dollar ceilings and tax bands use that year’s versioned parameters; 2025 does not include the 2026 nonitemizer charitable deduction, charitable floor, overall itemized reduction or active-business QBI minimum.
2025 / 2026 earned income credit planning estimate: formula and assumptions
Estimated credit = min(phase-in credit, phased-out maximum), subject to eligibility and the published income cutoff.
Continuous planning estimate using published parameters for the selected year. It can differ from the IRS income-bin table. Confirm residency, identification, dependency, qualifying-child, foreign-income and prior-disallowance rules separately. EITC children can differ from child-tax-credit children.

What to keep in mind
Select 2025 or 2026 in the combined federal calculation. It combines supported income, deductions, credits and additional federal taxes; specialist worksheets retain the tax year stated in their controls.
QBI supports a verified deduction or one-business calculation. EITC supports a verified amount or a continuous planning estimate that can differ from the IRS income-bin table. The child-credit calculation includes the three-or-more-child payroll alternative with its stated inputs.
Eligibility and worksheet-specific modified income must be confirmed. Enter AMT and unsupported special-return amounts separately, and exclude any amount already calculated here from other deductions or credits.
State/local comparisons use your own flat-rate assumptions and tax base. Federal bracket arithmetic can differ from tax-table rounding; these scenarios do not prepare or file a return.

Common questions
Does this produce one complete federal tax result?
No. The composed federal mode combines its supported income and additional-tax calculations, while the individual worksheets answer narrower questions. Unsupported deductions, credits, state taxes, and special cases can still change an actual return. Do not add a composed total to its component figures or to overlapping worksheet totals.
Which years and income rules are covered?
The detailed ordinary-income mode offers 2025 and 2026. Other modes state their own scope; qualified-gain, dependent-credit and AMT branches exclude the special cases listed with their results.
Does the dependent-credit worksheet establish eligibility?
No. Eligibility is supplied as an assumption. The basic refundable branch is limited to at most two qualifying children and excludes the special Schedule 8812 branches.
