How it works

A useful distinction

Midnight does not identify the date

A 09:00 start and 10:00 finish could mean one hour or 25 hours. Clock fields alone cannot distinguish them. Enter both dates for overnight bookings, equipment rentals or any interval potentially longer than one day.

Separating a clock time from a duration

A clock time identifies a point in a day, while a duration measures elapsed time between points. Check the overnight convention when entering only clock times. Use explicit dates when the interval spans several days. The result follows the selected calculation's assumptions and should not automatically be treated as a timezone-aware elapsed-time calculation across a daylight-saving change.

Time between clock times: formula and assumptions

Elapsed clock time = end−start−break; an earlier end time is treated as the following day.

This mode covers one shift of up to 24 hours and does not account for a timezone transition.

Between two dates and times: formula and assumptions

Elapsed duration = end date/time − start date/time.

This civil-time mode treats days as 24 hours; it does not apply daylight-saving transitions. Use time-zone conversion to compare zoned instants.

Worked example

Using the Time between clock times example:

Inputs
Start time
09:00
End time
17:30
Unpaid break (minutes)
30
Method

Elapsed clock time = end−start−break; an earlier end time is treated as the following day.

Result

Example result

Elapsed time: 08:00:00

Decimal hours: 8

These are illustrative inputs. Change the values to explore a different scenario.

Common questions

Which mode should I use for an interval spanning several dates?

Use Between two dates and times. The clock-time mode represents a single interval of up to 24 hours.

Is civil-time duration always the elapsed time between zoned instants?

No. Daylight-saving transitions can change actual elapsed time. This mode does not apply timezone offsets or transition rules.
