How it works

A useful distinction

Match the actual working week

A Monday-to-Friday calendar overstates available days for a team working Monday through Thursday. Use custom weekdays before excluding holidays; otherwise the count can look precise while describing a schedule nobody actually works.

Checking the boundaries of a day count

A day count can change depending on whether the starting and ending dates are included. Review the mode's boundary convention before using the result for an interval or deadline. Business-day modes also depend on the selected weekend pattern and holiday list. Keep the calendar rule consistent when comparing two periods, rather than assuming every day counter uses the same convention.

Between two dates: formula and assumptions

Calendar-day difference uses date-only values, independent of daylight-saving changes.

Results are signed if the end precedes the start. Including the end date adds one day in the direction of the interval.

Business days: formula and assumptions

Count Monday through Friday, excluding supplied holiday dates.

The start date is included; the end date is excluded unless selected. Weekends and supplied holidays are counted once.

Add business days: formula and assumptions

Move forward or backward, skipping Saturdays, Sundays, and the supplied holidays.

The starting date is not counted. Negative quantities subtract business days; zero leaves the date unchanged.

Custom business-day count: formula and assumptions

Count selected working weekdays that are not excluded holidays.

Date-only Gregorian arithmetic. Start-inclusive and end-exclusive unless selected. Reverse ranges return a signed count.

Add custom business days: formula and assumptions

Move one calendar day at a time and count only working dates.

The starting date is excluded. Negative values subtract business days. Zero leaves the date unchanged.

Worked example

Using the Between two dates example:

Start date
2026-01-01
End date
2026-10-09
Include end date
No
Method

Calendar-day difference uses date-only values, independent of daylight-saving changes.

Common questions

Are both dates included in the count?

Calendar differences count the interval between dates; the include-end option adds a day. Business counts include the start and exclude the end unless selected.

What happens when the end date precedes the start?

The result is signed to show a reverse interval, rather than silently changing the dates into forward order.
