How it works

A useful distinction

Rotate rectangular tiles before comparing orders

In a straight grid without offcut reuse, rotating rectangular tiles can change row and column rounding even when tile area stays identical. Swap tile length and width, keeping room dimensions, grout and allowance unchanged, then compare order quantities.

Separating covered area from tile layout

An area-based tile estimate describes coverage, while the layout mode accounts for the entered tile dimensions and arrangement assumptions. Check whether gaps, waste, box quantities, and prices are included in the selected fields. Rounding to whole boxes can increase the purchase quantity above the exact coverage. Edge cuts and an unusual room outline can require a separate layout review.

Rectangular area: formula and assumptions

Tiles = ceil(room area/tile area×(1+waste)).

This area-based estimate excludes grout-joint layout and pattern-specific cuts.

Layout, boxes & cost: formula and assumptions

Grid count = ceil((L+g)/(tile L+g)) × ceil((W+g)/(tile W+g)).

Area mode estimates periodic tile-plus-grout modules. Allowance is applied before rounding; complete boxes may add surplus. Price per area refers to the selected area unit.

Common questions

Why can box ordering exceed the estimated tile count?

Procurement rounds up to complete boxes after the allowance is applied, so the purchased quantity can include additional surplus.

Does a simple area estimate predict every cut in a pattern?

No. Area mode does not fully reproduce pattern-specific cuts. Grid layout, grout spacing and actual room geometry affect procurement.
