How it works
Density matters differently across price units
Raising bulk density by 10% increases estimated weight by 10% at the same bed volume. It changes a weight-based quotation, but not a volume-based one. Match the supplier’s charging unit before comparing delivered material prices.
Using a material density for gravel estimates
A gravel volume estimate comes from the bed shape and depth, while a mass estimate also depends on the entered material density. Keep these quantities separate when comparing a supplier's price by volume with a price by weight. Bag sizes and cost assumptions should match the product being considered. Compaction and irregular ground can change the amount needed in practice.
Rectangular bed: formula and assumptions
Cubic yards = length×width×depth/12/27. Weight = volume×bulk density.
Bulk density is an editable estimate and varies by material, moisture, and compaction.
Circular bed and bags: formula and assumptions
Volume=π(diameter/2)²×depth; bag count=ceil(volume×density/bag weight).
Bulk density depends on stone size, moisture, and compaction.
Beds, bags & material costs: formula and assumptions
Volume = combined area × depth × (1 + allowance). Whole bags = ceiling(total material / bag size).
Combine beds before rounding bag counts. Bulk volume and weight prices use their selected units; bag prices apply to whole bags. Density is a user-entered assumption.

Using the Rectangular bed example:
- Length (ft)
- 20
- Width (ft)
- 10
- Depth (inches)
- 3
- Bulk density (lb/cubic yard)
- 2800
- Price per cubic yard ($)
- 50
Cubic yards = length×width×depth/12/27. Weight = volume×bulk density.

Common questions
Why can the same gravel volume have different weights?
Bulk density depends on stone type, size, moisture and compaction. Enter a density appropriate to the material being ordered.
How is the bag count rounded?
The required modeled weight is divided by bag weight and rounded up to a whole bag, so purchased quantity may exceed the estimate.
