How it works
Combine beds before buying bags
If two beds each need 1.2 bags, ordering separately rounds to four bags. Combining their volume needs only three. Use the multiple-bed input when the same material and depth apply so leftovers can serve both beds.
Turning bed area and depth into mulch volume
Mulch volume depends on both the bed area and the intended layer depth. A common mistake is to mix a depth in inches with area measurements in feet without conversion. Use the bag and cost mode to connect volume with the package size being purchased. The estimate assumes the entered bed dimensions and layer depth, which can differ from settled material on site.
Rectangular bed: formula and assumptions
Cubic yards = length×width×depth/12/27. Weight = volume×bulk density.
Bulk density is an editable estimate and varies by material, moisture, and compaction.
Known area: formula and assumptions
Cubic yards = area(ft²)×depth(in)/12/27.
Add together separate bed areas before entering the total.
Beds, bags & material costs: formula and assumptions
Volume = combined area × depth × (1 + allowance). Whole bags = ceiling(total material / bag size).
Combine beds before rounding bag counts. Bulk volume and weight prices use their selected units; bag prices apply to whole bags. Density is a user-entered assumption.

Using the Rectangular bed example:
- Length (ft)
- 20
- Width (ft)
- 10
- Depth (inches)
- 3
- Bulk density (lb/cubic yard)
- 600
- Price per cubic yard ($)
- 50
Cubic yards = length×width×depth/12/27. Weight = volume×bulk density.

Common questions
Can I combine several irregular planting beds?
Measure and add their areas, then use the known-area mode with the intended uniform depth. Separate different depths into separate calculations.
Why is the estimated mulch weight uncertain?
Weight depends on bulk density, which varies with material, moisture and compaction. The density input is an estimate.
