How it works

A useful distinction

A category boundary is not a cliff

BMI 24.9 and 25.0 sit on opposite sides of a category boundary but are numerically very close. A label change alone cannot establish a sudden health change; measurement precision and clinical context still matter.

Interpreting an adult BMI screening category

The calculator uses adult height and weight to produce a BMI screening result. Check the units carefully, especially when switching between metric and imperial measurements. A category does not measure body fat directly or explain why a person's weight has changed. Use the result as one limited piece of information, with the model's notes, rather than as an individualized health target.

Adult BMI screening: formula and assumptions

BMI = kg / m².

Adult BMI categories summarize population-level risk. Individual assessment requires more than weight and height.

Common questions

Does an adult BMI category describe my overall health?

No. It is a population screening reference. Individual assessment needs more information than weight and height.

Can a muscular person receive a higher BMI category?

Yes. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so body composition matters when interpreting the number.
