- Body mass index
- 22.86 kg/m²
- Adult screening category
- Healthy-weight range
About this result
A screening category is not a diagnosis or an assessment of your worth. A clinician can interpret this in your individual context.
How it works
Height errors affect both calculations
At 70 kg, entering 170 cm gives BMI about 24.2; entering 172 cm gives about 23.7. Recheck measured height before interpreting a small difference, especially when comparing records from different visits.
Choosing an adult or child BMI calculation
BMI relates weight to height, but the adult and child modes do not interpret that number in the same way. Use the age-appropriate mode and check the measurement units before calculating. A BMI category is a screening reference rather than a complete assessment of health or body composition. The result should be considered alongside the limitations and references shown on this page.
Adult BMI: formula and assumptions
BMI = weight in kilograms / (height in meters)².
BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. This calculator uses adult categories for ages 20 and over.
Child & teen BMI-for-age: formula and assumptions
BMI=kg/m². CDC LMS z=[(BMI/M)^L−1]/(L×S). Above P95, extended percentile=90+10×Φ[(BMI−P95)/sigma].
Uses the sex-specific CDC 2000 reference with the 2022 extension above the 95th percentile. Completed age in months selects the corresponding half-month row. Ages 2 to under 20 only. Percentiles are screening references, not diagnoses or weight-loss targets.
Worked example
Using the Adult BMI example:
- Measurement system
- Metric (kg, cm)
- Weight (kg)
- 70
- Height (cm)
- 175
- Age (years)
- 30
BMI = weight in kilograms / (height in meters)².

What to keep in mind
BMI does not measure body composition and may be less informative during pregnancy or for highly muscular people.

Common questions
Should a child's BMI use adult categories?
No. The child mode uses sex-specific CDC references and age in completed months. Adult categories are used from age 20.
Does a BMI result measure body fat or diagnose a condition?
No. BMI relates weight to height. Body composition, pregnancy and individual health circumstances can limit its interpretation.
