- Effective annual rate

How it works
Check the zero-interest payment floor
For 12,000 repaid over 24 months, a zero-interest payment is 500. An entered payment below 500 cannot repay that principal within the term at any nonnegative rate; check amounts before interpreting a failed solution.
Interpreting an implied interest rate
An implied rate is the rate that reconciles the entered balance, payment, and term under the displayed model. It is not automatically a lender's disclosed annual percentage rate, because fee treatment and timing may differ. Verify the payment frequency and amounts before solving. Small differences in a payment or remaining term can change the rate needed to make the figures consistent.
Implied rate: formula and assumptions
Find the monthly rate r that satisfies the amortizing payment equation; nominal annual rate = 12r.
Fees and irregular payment dates are excluded. This is an implied interest rate, not a fee-inclusive APR.
Worked example
Reference example currency: USD. These fixed examples do not change with your calculator preferences.
Using the Implied rate example:
- Loan amount ($)
- 250000
- Term (years)
- 30
- Monthly payment ($)
- 1700
Find the monthly rate r that satisfies the amortizing payment equation; nominal annual rate = 12r.
Example result
Nominal annual interest rate: 7.22%
Effective annual rate: 7.46%

Common questions
Is the solved interest rate the same as APR?
Not necessarily. This mode excludes fees and irregular payment dates, so it solves an implied rate rather than a fee-inclusive APR.
What if the payment is too small for the entered term?
The inputs may not support a nonnegative amortizing rate. Review the principal, payment and term instead of treating an invalid scenario as a quote.
