What this tool helps you work out
A group expense splitter compares what each person paid with their share of the group’s costs. Someone who paid more than their share should receive money; someone who paid less should pay. Enter participants and expenses, choose equal or weighted shares, and calculate a settlement plan. Amounts are allocated in whole currency units or cents without losing rounding remainders.
How it works
Share weights express ratios, not amounts
Weights of 1 and 2 allocate the same shares as 10 and 20. Multiplying every included person’s weight by the same positive number changes neither the proportions nor the rounded allocation; change relative weights to change responsibility.
Enter participants, payers, and the people sharing each expense
Give every participant a unique name. A default share weight of one for each person splits common expenses equally. Use a larger weight when a person should cover a larger portion: weights of two and one allocate two-thirds and one-third of a bill. Names are matched without case sensitivity, and commas or colons are reserved for the custom-share syntax.
Each expense records a description, the person who paid, and the total amount. Leave its optional shares field blank to use all participants’ default weights. To include only part of the group or change the weights for a specific bill, enter pairs such as Alex:2, Sam:1. Each listed person must already exist in the participant list. Someone may pay a bill without being included in its shares.
Group trip example with several people paying
Alex, Sam, and Jordan share equally. Alex pays 180 for a hotel and Sam pays 60 for dinner, giving total expenses of 240. Each participant owes 80. Alex paid 100 more than their share, Sam paid 20 less, and Jordan paid 80 less. The settlement plan therefore asks Sam to pay Alex 20 and Jordan to pay Alex 80.
After those transfers, every person has contributed a net 80. The original payments remain intact in the breakdown; settlements simply resolve the differences. For an unequal example, an expense of 90 with shares Alex:2, Sam:1 allocates 60 to Alex and 30 to Sam, with no share assigned to Jordan. Other expenses can still use the default equal split.
Understand exact rounding and settlement rows
A bill may not divide evenly into the smallest currency unit. For example, 10 split equally among three people at two-decimal precision cannot give everyone exactly 3.333… in payable money. The tool first allocates whole cents, then distributes remaining cents to the largest fractional shares. Ties follow participant order. The allocated amounts always add back to the rounded expense total.
The detailed table contains balance rows followed by settlement rows. Balance rows show each person’s paid amount, owed share, and net position. Settlement rows name the sender, recipient, and transfer amount. The algorithm matches debtors to creditors in a consistent order. It settles the group’s balances, but it does not claim to find the mathematically smallest number of transfers for every possible group.
Use one currency and keep the shared record clear
Every expense must be expressed in the selected currency before you calculate. A trip involving several currencies needs a chosen exchange-rate convention applied before entry; switching the display currency does not perform that conversion. Choose a rounding precision appropriate to the money you will transfer. Use the expense descriptions to preserve the purpose of each bill and reduce confusion when reviewing the table.
Finflo does not move money or create a live shared group. You can download the results to share the settlement plan and save the inputs in your local workspace for later changes. If a payment was entered against the wrong person or a participant is missing, correct the original records and recalculate. Reusing an old settlement plan after changing expenses can lead to incorrect transfers.
Group expenses & settlements: formula and assumptions
Owed share = expense × participant weight ÷ total included weight. Net balance = paid − owed. Positive balances receive money; negative balances pay.
Every expense is allocated in the chosen smallest currency unit. Remaining units go to the largest fractional shares, with participant order breaking ties. A deterministic debtor-to-creditor matching settles balances without losing pennies; it is not a proof of the fewest possible transfers.
Worked example
Reference example currency: USD. These fixed examples do not change with your calculator preferences.
Using the Group expenses & settlements example:
- Participants
Participants Unique name Default share weight Alex 1 Sam 1 Jordan 1 - Group expenses
Group expenses Expense Paid by (participant name) Amount paid ($) Optional shares: Alex:2, Sam:1 Hotel Alex 180 Not entered Dinner Sam 60 Not entered - Amount decimal places
- 2 — cents
Owed share = expense × participant weight ÷ total included weight. Net balance = paid − owed. Positive balances receive money; negative balances pay.
Example result
Total expenses: $240.00
Participants: 3
Settlement transfers: 2
- Positive balances receive money; negative balances pay. Follow the settlement rows to settle the group.
- Amounts are allocated at 2 decimal places. Fractional remainders are distributed without losing money.

What to keep in mind
Settlement suggestions do not transfer money. Export the result to share the plan; this is not a live collaborative group.
Use one currency throughout. Currency selection changes labels, not exchange rates. Calculate, then save a named scenario in My workspace to keep it in this browser; export a workspace backup to move it to another device.

Common questions
Can different people pay different expenses?
Yes. Every expense has its own payer. The calculator totals what each person paid, subtracts their allocated share, and settles the net balances across the group.
How do I split one expense among only two people?
In that expense’s shares field, enter only those names and their weights, such as Alex:1, Sam:1. Other participants receive no share of that expense.
Can the person who paid be excluded from the split?
Yes. The payer records who supplied the money; the shares field records who owes the expense. They are independent, so someone can pay entirely on behalf of others.
What happens when a bill does not divide evenly?
The tool allocates whole units at your chosen precision, then distributes the remaining units by largest fractional remainder. Participant order breaks equal remainders, and the total is preserved.
Does this transfer money between participants?
No. It provides a settlement plan. Review the names and amounts, then arrange any actual transfers through your own payment method.
Can the group edit the same record together?
No. Saved records live in the current browser. Export the results or a workspace backup to share a copy; there is no synchronized group account in this version.
