Pregnancy Weight Gain Calculator

Compare pregnancy weight gain with BMI-specific singleton or twin reference guidance, without prescribing an exact week-by-week target.

Your inputs

Calculations run in your browser. No account needed.

EXAMPLE RESULTCalculated locally
Pre-pregnancy BMI
21.22
Current cumulative gain
5 kg
Total reference gain
11.5–16 kg
Second/third-trimester reference rate
0.35–0.5 kg/week

About this result

A single measurement cannot establish whether gain is appropriate. Discuss patterns, fetal growth, and clinical context with your care team.

Published total and weekly ranges are rounded independently. They do not define an exact week-by-week required weight.

How it works

A useful distinction

Use the starting pregnancy measurements

The reference group uses pre-pregnancy weight and height, while current weight calculates gain. Replacing starting weight with today’s weight changes both quantities and can make the comparison misleading, even if every number looks plausible.

Reading pregnancy weight-gain references

The calculator compares the entered pregnancy information with the reference framework described on this page. Check the starting measurements and pregnancy timing before interpreting the result. A reference range does not determine what is appropriate for every pregnancy or explain a sudden change in weight. Individual maternity care takes account of information that is not captured by this calculation.

Pregnancy gain reference: formula and assumptions

Pre-pregnancy BMI = kg/m². Current gain = current weight − pre-pregnancy weight. Reference totals and rates come from published BMI-specific guidance.

Full-pregnancy totals are separate from average second- and third-trimester weekly rates. The week selects the relevant context; no exact required weight is predicted for a particular day. Twin ranges are provisional and do not have a universal weekly trajectory.

Worked example

Using the Pregnancy gain reference example:

Inputs
Measurement system
Metric (kg, cm)
Pre-pregnancy weight (kg)
65
Current weight (kg)
70
Height (cm)
175
Completed pregnancy weeks (weeks)
24
Pregnancy type

Method

Pre-pregnancy BMI = kg/m². Current gain = current weight − pre-pregnancy weight. Reference totals and rates come from published BMI-specific guidance.

Result

Example result

Pre-pregnancy BMI: 21.22

Current cumulative gain: 5 kg

Total reference gain: 11.5–16 kg

Second/third-trimester reference rate: 0.35–0.5 kg/week

  • A single measurement cannot establish whether gain is appropriate. Discuss patterns, fetal growth, and clinical context with your care team.
  • Published total and weekly ranges are rounded independently. They do not define an exact week-by-week required weight.

These are illustrative inputs. Change the values to explore a different scenario.

Common questions

Is the result a required weight for my exact pregnancy week?

No. It separates full-pregnancy reference totals from average later-trimester rates and does not prescribe an exact daily weight.

Are twin-pregnancy ranges the same as singleton ranges?

No. Twin ranges are provisional references and do not have a universal weekly trajectory. Clinical context remains necessary.
