How it works
A deducted fee needs grossing up
To receive 10,000 after a financed fee equal to 5% of the gross note, the note must be 10,526.32. Simply adding 500 leaves only 9,975 after the fee is deducted.
Checking whether consolidation reduces total cost
Consolidation replaces several payment streams with a new borrowing arrangement. Compare the new term, fees, and total repayment with the existing debts, not just the first monthly payment. A longer term may make the payment smaller while keeping debt outstanding for longer. Use the fee-adjusted comparison to see how supported upfront charges affect the apparent savings.
Consolidation comparison: formula and assumptions
New principal = sum of balances + financed fees. Compare the amortizing new payment with current payment obligations.
A lower monthly payment can increase total interest when it extends the repayment term.
Consolidation with fee-adjusted comparison: formula and assumptions
New total cash = installments + upfront fee. Savings = old total cash − new total cash.
Compare the full repayment cost with existing fixed minimums. Percentage fees may apply to debt principal or a gross note; a financed gross-note fee is solved by dividing debt by one minus the fee rate.

Using the Consolidation comparison example:
- Debts: balance, APR %, minimum monthly payment
- 5000, 22, 150 10000, 12, 250
- New loan annual rate (%)
- 10
- New loan term
- 5
- Financed consolidation fees ($)
- 500
New principal = sum of balances + financed fees. Compare the amortizing new payment with current payment obligations.
Example result
Regular monthly payment: $329.33
Loan amount: $15,500.00
Total interest: $4,259.75
Total payments: $19,759.75
Payoff time: 60 months
Current total minimum payments: $400.00

Common questions
Are consolidation fees added to the new loan?
The modeled financed fees are added to the combined debt balance before calculating the new loan payment.
Is a lower monthly payment necessarily a cheaper consolidation?
No. A longer repayment term can reduce payments while increasing total interest. Compare fees, interest and time in debt together.
